FEB UI and Oxford University Collaborate to Hold OPHI Summer School 2022<\/b><\/p>\n

DEPOK – (1\/8\/2022) The Faculty of Economics and Business, Universitas Indonesia (FEB UI), in collaboration with the Oxford Poverty and Human Development Initiative (OPHI) – Oxford University held the “OPHI Summer School 2022: Multidimensional Poverty Measurement and Analysis” on August 1-13, 2022. The course is a hybrid, with participants able to participate online via Zoom or face-to-face at FEB UI Depok Campus.<\/span><\/p>\n

\"\"<\/p>\n

OPHI Director, Prof. Sabina Alkire, and the OPHI Team, including researchers and academics with extensive experience in developing and applying the Multidimensional Poverty Index (MPI), will co-lead the 2022 Summer School.<\/span><\/p>\n

The course aims to help those interested in gaining skills or capabilities in multidimensional poverty measurement, exceptionally professional staff of national statistical offices or government ministries working on poverty alleviation, professionals from international development agencies, academics, and doctoral students.<\/span><\/p>\n

The Summer School runs intensively for 2 (two) weeks to provide a thorough technical introduction to multidimensional poverty measurement using the Alkire Foster (AF) method. Not only that, but the class also shares examples of its practical application.<\/span><\/p>\n

Each participant will go through teaching and working group sessions, all in English. Throughout the Summer School, participants should be actively involved in discussing and working through problem sets.<\/span><\/p>\n

Here are the various topics covered during the Summer School:<\/span><\/p>\n

– Unidimensional Poverty Measures<\/span><\/p>\n

– Multidimensional Poverty Measures and Methodologies<\/span><\/p>\n

– The Alkire Foster (AF) Method of Multidimensional Poverty Measurement<\/span><\/p>\n

– Measurement Design – Purpose, Dimensions, Indicators, Cutoffs, and Weights<\/span><\/p>\n

– Estimation of Multidimensional Poverty and Interpretation of the Results<\/span><\/p>\n

– Subgroup Decomposition and Dimensional Break-Down<\/span><\/p>\n

– Multidimensional Poverty Changes Over Time<\/span><\/p>\n

– Interpretation and Analysis of Multidimensional Poverty<\/span><\/p>\n

Upon completion of the course, students are expected to improve their skills in constructing and analyzing multidimensional poverty measures. In addition, it illustrates their policy relevance and usefulness for analytical purposes. Based on Amartya Sen’s capability approach and national and global MPIs, empirical motivations for measuring multidimensional poverty will be presented along with a complete measurement toolkit.
