Guest Lecture on Financial Technology From University of Glasgow, United Kingdom
On April 8th, we welcomed a guest lecturer from University of Glasgow, Dr. Ramona Blanes who was giving a lecture about Financial Technology. It was hosted by Graduate School of Management (PPIM) FEB UI. This session was opened by Mr. Arif Wibisono Lubis, Ph.D (Head of Bachelor Program of Management). It was also attended by Mr. Zaafri Ananto Husodo, Ph.D (Deputy Director of Graduate Program of Management), Mrs. Muthia Pramesti, M.M., CFP (Head of International Office FEB UI), and postgraduate students.
In the beginning, she talked about what business do financial institutions involve in and what technologies can be embedded into the business to provide better financial services. Technologies such as Artificial Intelligent (AI), big data analytics, biological computing, blockchain, cloud computing etc. are changing the way that we take advantage of financial services. As the changes are going on, public value should be expressed clearly so that people are able to accept the ongoing changes which are needed by present and future generations.
Later on, Dr. Ramona Blanes emphasized that fintech companies should not only seek for profit but also focus on sustainable development goals (SDG) and abide by the business ethics. She gave an example of a British fintech company which loans money to the poor people in Kenya.
Technology aims to improve humans’ life, so as financial technology. It notices the gaps between the financial sectors and the users of financial services and trying to fill them with new technology which can bring convenience to consumers.
We highly appreciate Dr. Ramona for sharing valuable knowledge to us.
