DEPOK – (8/8/2020) The Postgraduate Program in Economics (PPIE), Faculty of Economics and Business, Universitas Indonesia, held an open session Doctoral Promotion for Irfani Fithria Ummul Muzayanah (1506776912) online, on Saturday (8/8/2020).
The Doctoral Promotion Session was chaired by Dr. Beta Yulianita Gitaharie, with supervisors, Prof. Suahasil Nazara, Ph.D. (Promoter), Benedictus Raksaka Mahi, Ph.D. (Co-Promoter 1), and Dr. Djoni Hartono (Co-Promoter 2). The team of examiners consisted of, Dr. Hera Susanti (Chief Examiner), Prof. Moh. Ikhsan, Ph.D., M. Halley Yudhistira, Ph.D., Dr. Alin Halimatussadiah, and Ibnu Syabri, Ph.D.
The dissertation written by the Promovendus entitled “Does Size Really Matter? The Effects of Urban Form on Social Capital Formation in Urban Areas in Indonesia”. The urban development paradigm known as New Urbanism is claimed to be the right urban form in supporting the formation of social capital. However, the relationship between the two variables has not been empirically studied at length, leading to mixed results in the literature.
This dissertation aims to determine the role of urban planning or what is known as the urban form in the formation of social capital, using the case study of cities in Indonesia. This study uses metropolitan cities as the first case study, while the second case study covers all cities in Indonesia.
The empirical results of this dissertation show interesting findings, which are contrary to the New Urbanism paradigm. The empirical results in both case studies consistently show that density actually has a negative relationship with indicators of social capital. Interestingly, by using a small and medium-sized city subsample, density actually has a positive relationship with indicators of social capital.
The availability of public space and recreation has a positive and significant role in the development of social capital. Apart from that, the empirical results of this study also show an interesting finding, namely that shopping areas actually have a negative contribution to the formation of social capital.
Finally, this study also finds that high road connectivity does not positively support the formation of social capital in Indonesian cities. This study offers recommendations that can be of concern to policy makers and city planners, to consider urban form factors in urban planning priorities to support the formation of social capital.
