LD FEB UI Research: 73 Percent of Gojek Drivers Optimistic Income will improve

Jakarta – As many as 89 percent of Gojek drivers decided to stay as partners and 73 percent said they were optimistic that income would improve after the COVID-19 pandemic, based on research conducted by the Demographic Institute of the Faculty of Economics and Business (LD FEB), Universitas Indonesia.

“The optimism of Gojek partners is interesting because it shows the driver-partners’ trust in the digital economy ecosystem as a place to make a living, as well as the resilience of the on-demand startup business that is able to withstand the crisis,” said Deputy Head of LD FEB UI Paksi Walandouw in a virtual discussion in Jakarta, Monday.

Paksi Walandouw specifies GoFood partners who plan to continue in the next few years, number as many as 95%, GoSend MSME partners 87%, MSME Gopay 90%, and driver partners at 96%.

He said that 74-81% of business operators are aware that the impact of the pandemic on their income will continue for at least the next three months.

Driver-partners, he continued, are more optimistic that the impact of the pandemic will be over more quickly, where 40% believe it will be over in three months.

He explained that one of the factors that encouraged the partners to stay was the existence of social assistance, not only from Gojek but also between partners.

“The social assistance was positively received by the partners, with the majority of partners or 84% appreciating the social assistance they received from Gojek. Most, or 74% of partners who received assistance said they felt the benefits provided,” he said.

The social assistance that most drivers (77%) receive is the basic food program or free meal vouchers, the rest receive health assistance, such as temperature checks; distribution of health packages consisting of masks, hand sanitizers and others, spraying vehicle disinfectants, vehicle installments benefits, and cooperation with the government for the Pre-Work Card program facilities.

“The attitude of mutual cooperation is reflected in the finding that despite experiencing a decline in income, almost half of Gojek driver partners or 44% provide social assistance to others,” he said.
