LD FEB UI and FKP: Impact of the COVID-19 Pandemic on Social, Demographic, Health and Economic Conditions for the Elderly
DEPOK – (5/8/2021) In a series of commemoration of the 57th anniversary, the Demographic Institute of the Faculty of Economics and Business, Universitas Indonesia (LD FEB UI) in collaboration with the Indonesian Development Studies Forum (FKP) held the first Regular Seminar on Thursday (5 /8/2021).
In the seminar, Prof. Sri Moertiningsih Adioetomo and Elda Luciana Pardede delivered their presentations on “The Social, Health, and Economic Impacts of COVID-19 on Older Persons in Indonesia.”
According to Prof. Toening and Elda, the impact of the COVID-19 pandemic is more felt by those who are vulnerable, including the elderly. The elderly are more likely to be poor than the younger ones, especially the elderly women, the elderly living in rural areas and the elderly with disabilities. The pandemic also affects the health of the elderly physically and mentally. Mobility restrictions make it difficult for them to access health services.
In addition, the elderly are also most vulnerable to decreased income as well as increased spending during the pandemic, especially for food and health. Handling the pandemic needs to be done by increasing access to basic needs and increasing food security.
A protection system for the elderly must be in place, so that in an emergency like now, mitigation is easier to do. This should be done by building long-term health, economic and social assistance systems for the elderly, which will benefit the population as a whole in the future.
