“Social Security and Worker Welfare” Webinar MSS FEB UI with BPJS Ketenagakerjaan

DEPOK – (16/9/2021) In the context of National Customer Day, on Thursday (16/9/ 2021) the Management Student Society of the Faculty of Economics and Business, Universitas Indonesia (MSS FEB UI) in collaboration with the BPJS Ketenagakerjaan held a webinar with the theme “Social Security and Workers Welfare”

The speakers for this Webinar were Mahatmi P. Saronto, Director of Manpower from Bappenas, Anggoro Eko Cahyo, President Director of BPJS Employment, with moderator Rahmat Aryo Baskoro, M.M., FEB UI lecturer.

The event commenced with a speech from the Pj. Dean of FEB UI, Teguh Dartanto, Ph.D., who said, “Social security and employment are important issues, especially within the context of the pandemic and Indonesia’s economic recovery. Cooperation between faculties, government, and BPJS Ketenagakerjaan is an important part in the world of education.”

As the first resource person, Mahatmi P. Saronto, presented “Economic Growth and the Creation of Flexible and Inclusive Employment”. Ms. Mahatmi started the session by explaining the impact of the Covid-19 pandemic on the national economy related to employment issues, unemployment rates, and the phenomenon of shifting work to the informal sector such as agriculture. In addition, she also explained that there are still gaps for female workers, people with disabilities, and young people.

In addition, the development target in 2022 and Indonesia’s aspirations for 2045 have 2 major keys, namely economic recovery and economic transformation. “Bappenas has implemented 6 economic transformation strategies, namely, efforts to reform education and vocational training, as well as the Employment Cluster Employment Act which encourages flexible and inclusive work. In addition, there is a plan to develop an inclusive job center which is expected to provide information on social security to workers and prospective workers,” said Mahatmi, closing the session.

Anggoro Eko Cahyo, as the second resource person, explained about “Social Security and Welfare” which began with the presentation of issues related to change, opportunities, and risks due to disruption through digitalization and pandemics. One of the issues raised is the rise of gig workers who are difficult to reach by social security.

Social security is a constitutional right, a mandatory state program and a welfare safety net in the event of risks and economic shocks. The modernization of social security in Indonesia is also said to be not lagging behind other countries, however, the participation in the informal sector is still low because of its limited scope.
