DEPOK – (13/8/2020) In commemoration of its 56th Anniversary, the Demographic Institute of the Faculty of Economics and Business, Universitas Indonesia (LD FEB UI) held a special webinar in collaboration with the Development Studies Forum (FKP), entitled “The Impact of Commute Time on Health Status of Commuting Workers in Jabodetabek Metropolitan Area” on Thursday (13/8/2020).

The speaker for this special webinar was Dr. Chotib Hasan, Senior Researcher LD FEB UI, hosted by Dewa Wisana, Ph.D., Deputy Head of LD FEB UI, and moderated by Rachmat Reksa Samudra, S.E., M.A., Researcher LD FEB UI.

Chotib Hasan, as the speaker, said that the growth of cities and towns in the Jabodetabek metropolitan area has resulted in several problems, including traffic congestion, which can lead to higher travel and social costs, and lower levels of worker productivity.

Based on the 2017 Sakernas data analysis, around 22% of workers in the Jabodetabek metropolitan area undertake a shuttle mobility pattern called commuting. This percentage is the highest among 9 other metropolitan areas in Indonesia. Data also shows that nearly 12% of commuter workers in this metropolitan area use public transportation modes. This percentage is the highest compared to other metropolitan areas in Indonesia.

“The longer the travel time from residence to place of work or activity or vice versa, will have an impact on economic losses of around 65 trillion rupiah in 2020. This      commuter activity also has an impact on the development of residential areas and activity areas in metropolitan areas. The length of time for commuting      also affects health behavior, such as stress,” explained Chotib.

Chotib continued that basically, travel times and frequency of rides tend to have a negative impact on the health status of commuters. Meanwhile, commuters who act as passengers tend to be healthier than commuters who act as drivers. Meanwhile, the older the commuters, the lower their health status. There was no difference in health status between male and female commuters. (hjtp)
