LD FEB UI Regular Seminar: Vulnerabilities in the COVID-19 Period and Its Implications for Handling and Recovery Policies in Indonesia
DEPOK – (19/10/2021) To take a deeper look at how vulnerable population groups have the potential to be left behind from policies for handling the COVID-19 pandemic, the Demographic Institute FEB UI collaborated with UNESCO Jakarta to develop an analysis entitled “Vulnerability in the COVID-19 Period and Its Implications for Handling Policies and Recovery in Indonesia”.
This analysis is derived from secondary data from various sources, including the National Socio-Economic Survey (SUSENAS), the National Labor Force Survey (SAKERNAS), Ministry of Health data (COVID-19 dashboards and vaccinations), and the Socio-Economic Impact Survey for Households in Indonesia. conducted by UNDP, UNICEF, Prospera and SMERU.
The analysis was presented by the LD FEB UI Research team consisting of Diahhadi Setyonaluri, Ph.D., Rachmat Reksa Samoedra, S.E., M.A., and Muhammad Faisal, S.E., at the LD FEB UI Regular Seminar online, on Tuesday (19/10/2021).
There are three main conclusions from the analysis, namely (1) inequality faced by marginalized population groups (women, the elderly and people with disabilities) increases the vulnerability of these groups to exposure to the COVID-19 virus as well as socioeconomic vulnerability due to the crisis that occurred during the pandemic; (2) disparities in health facilities and personnel between regions contribute to increasing the vulnerability of marginalized groups due to their limited access to quality health services and hindering policy responses by the government to reach these groups; (3) policy responses, especially social assistance, have helped people in need during the COVID-19 pandemic, but additional steps need to be taken to reach marginalized communities.
