Accounting Students of FEB UI Win the 2019 Diplomacy Award International Model United Nations (WINUN)

University of Indonesia Faculty of Economics and Business Accounting students Aurelia Serafina Romaris Silalahi class of 2017 won the Diplomacy Award (equivalent to Champion 1) in the WFUNA International Model United Nations (WIMUN) 2019 event.

The World Federation of United Nations Associations (WFUNA) is the organization responsible for the creation of WIMUN, running the 6th iteration of its flagship conference in New York City which was attended by 1,700 delegates from more than 70 countries where the opening and closing ceremonies were held at the UN Headquarters directly.

WIMUN is the most accurate and realistic UN simulation in which all topics discussed at WIMUN are the latest items considered by the UN itself in its agenda.

The WFUNA International Model United Nations (WIMUN) 2019 event will be held on January 30 – February 2, 2019 at New York, United States.

This year’s conference is the largest WFUNA event on record, showing how the prevalence of non-circuit styles from the UN Model has become, regardless of how much attention the ‘competing’ high school and college circuits have in North America.

The diversity of participants attending the conference may be the most unique attribute; similar conferences in size naturally gather international attendance, but many attendees come from the host country of origin. However, in the case of WIMUN, even though it was held in the United States, the majority of participants were not Americans, but from various locations, starting from six continents.

The topic discussed by Aurelia Serafina was about Changing Populations Demographics and Sustainable Development.

“Discussions on population and demographic changes in each country and how each country can overcome them to ensure sustainable development. I myself represent the state of Guatemala in the meeting where Guatemala is one of the countries experiencing rapid population growth, but faces slow state progress, especially in various important sectors such as Health and Nutrition, Agriculture, Education, Government, and Environment, “he said.

“The benefit gained is getting a lot of knowledge about the workings of the ECOSOC (Economic and Social Council) and the United Nations itself as a whole which of course I cannot get from the UN simulation in general and deeper knowledge about the topic of Sustainable Development,”

“My hope in the future is to be able to perform better in other competitions and apply the knowledge I gained from the competition to help the progress of Indonesia,”
