DEPOK – Department of Economics, Economics, FEB UI held a Weekly Seminar entitled “Driving Hands, Eyes to Mobile: The Effects of Using a Smartphone in Driving Safety” which took place in Room 407, Postgraduate Building, on Wednesday (5/2/2020).

Student of the Department of Spatial Economics at VU Amsterdam, Francis Ostermeijer said that we provide new evidence about the effects of smartphone use that have resulted in road accidents. Then, exploiting variations in telephone usage fees in the Netherlands following the European Union roaming regulations in 2017 eliminated all roaming exchanges for EU residents.

This change makes it possible to estimate a difference model in differences, where non-Dutch drivers from the European Union are treated, while Dutch drivers function as a control group. First of all, we documented a substantial increase in the growth rates of cellular, text, and especially data usage.

“We found that the surge in smartphone usage has caused the number of accidents to increase by 15%. Under a reasonable assumption, our estimate implies an accident risk odds ratio of around 5,” he said. (Des)
