DEPOK – (14/9/2020) The Ministry of Education and Culture launched the “Indonesia Jaya Kampus Merdeka” (literally meaning independent campus for a glorious Indonesia) logo, which was followed by an online general lecture, Monday (14/9/2020).

Minister of Education and Culture Nadiem Makarim launched the “Independent Campus, Freedom to Learn” (Kampus Merdeka, Merdeka Belajar) policy in January 2020. The policy covers four programs at higher education institutions, namely university accreditation, the introduction of new study programs, easy procedures for the establishment of higher education institutions as legal entities, and students’ right to spend three semesters studying outside their major.

To support policy dissimilation and internalization, the Directorate General of Higher Education launched the “Indonesia Jaya Kampus Merdeka” logo. A logo represents the characteristics of a program and the reputation of an institution. The key messages of the logo are, among other things, the spirit of mutual cooperation (gotong royong), creative and innovative learning, and building future generations for a glorious Indonesia in the future. The Directorate General of Higher Education expects the spirit depicted in the logo to be spread to all corners of the country. The use of the logo in the design of various publication products of the “Kampus Merdeka” program is expected to represent the spirit of the policy.

Director General of Higher Education Prof. Ir. Nizam, Ph.D. said in the general lecture that the pandemic has sown uncertainty about the future. “We must be able to create scientific breakthroughs as problems become more complex and require collaboration from study programs, universities and campuses at one end and the real world at the other end.”

“’Kampus Merdeka’ is designed to remove the barriers in sciences and build more expansive collaboration among different departments. In the past, inter-departmental collaboration was difficult due to the thick barriers in sciences. Therefore, the ‘Kampus Merdeka’ spirit serves as a means to break through the barriers,” said Nizam.

To implement the “Kampus Merdeka” program, the Directorate General of Higher Education held discussions with Indonesians living in many foreign countries  and launched a consortium of five state universities for student exchange. It also held talks with the ambassador of the UK for cooperation in implementing the “Kampus Merdeka” program that has become a hot topic of conversation across the globe. “We appreciate university rectors for their support for the program through various programs and curriculum.”

“We should prepare our students with competence so that they can keep up with the fast changes. We give students and campuses freedom and open  the opportuity for learning as wide as possible. Synergy among universities, the government, industry, the public and the media will promote the spirit of gotong-royong in realizing the “Kampus Merdeka” concept. This is in line with the spirit of Ki Hadjar Dewantara, who said that the aim of education is not just to impart knowledge to students but also to set them free, to prepare them to become free, cultured people. Therefore, universities can meet the need of the real world and, like a fountain, inspires industrial development, creates jobs, builds society, and supports social development for the benefit of the people and state,” said Nizam.
