UI – BAPETEN Extends Cooperation on Supervision of Nuclear Energy Utilization

The University of Indonesia and the Nuclear Energy Supervisory Agency (BAPETEN) have again extended their cooperation for improving supervision on the use of nuclear energy in Indonesia. The signing of the Memorandum of Understanding (MOU) took place online from the UI Rectorate Building, Depok Campus and the BAPETEN Building Auditorium in Jakarta, on Wednesday (12/8). The signing of the MOU was conducted directly by the Head of BAPETEN Prof. Dr. Jazi Eko Istiyanto, M.Sc and UI Rector Prof. Ari Kuncoro, S.E., M.A., Ph.D and witnessed by invited guests, including the Vice Rector of UI for Research and Innovation Prof. Dr.rer.nat. Abdul Haris, M.Sc, UI Vice Rector for Human Resources and Assets Muhammad Luthfi Zuhdi, M.A., Ph.D., Head of Cooperation, Venture and Digital UI Prof. Dr. Ir. Dedi Priadi, DEA, Middle and Primary Echelons of BAPETEN, Deans of UI, and Director of UI Cooperation.

This collaboration between BAPETEN and UI aims to improve the safety, security and well-being of workers, society, as well as protection of the environment in order to increase the effectiveness of nuclear control through human resource development with education, research and community service.

UI Rector Prof. Ari Kuncoro, in his speech said that, “BAPETEN-UI has been working together since 2015 in the fields of education, research and community service, especially with several faculties at UI, namely, the Law Faculty, the Engineering Faculty, and the Mathematics and Natural Sciences (MIPA) Faculty. At FMIPA UI, BAPETEN has collaborated to, especially with the Medical Physics field of the FMIPA UI Physics Department, include conducting training and measuring X-ray doses for radiology. In addition, as an implementation of the Penta Helix collaboration, UI and BAPETEN also collaborate with the International Atomic Energy Agency / IAEA and Users or the medical device industry. As a result of this rapid development, UI will also open a Medical Physics study program at the Physics Department of FMIPA UI. “

On this occasion, the Head of BAPETEN Prof. Dr. Jazi Eko Istiyanto, M.Sc said that the cooperation between BAPETEN – UI has been working effectively. “Cooperation between the two agencies is important, considering that BAPETEN as a Supervisory Body requires involvement and input from academics and experts who are competent in various important aspects to assist BAPETEN in improving supervision of the use of nuclear energy, and UI no doubt has such expertise and competence.” said Prof. Jazi.

Concrete forms of cooperation that have been carried out over the last five years (2015-2019) include the study of Law Number 10 of 1997, which was held on April 24, 2015 – December 4, 2015 (Faculty of Law, UI); Dose Constraint Study for Health Sector Officers was held on 1 July 2015 – 30 November 2015 (MIPA UI Faculty); Implementation of X-Ray Aircraft Conformity Test in Eastern Indonesia and several other Indonesian regions held between 2015 – 2019 (MIPA UI); Review and Assessment of Reports on the Implementation of the Non-commercial Power Reactor Site Evaluation Management System (SMET) held on 23 February 2016 – 31 August 2016 (Energy Assessment Faculty of Engineering UI).

As an implementation of the Memorandum of Understanding, in the near future BAPETEN and FMIPA UI will hold an Online Seminar on Nuclear Safety (SKN) planned for October 2020 with the theme “Innovations to Support Nuclear Safety and Security for Advanced Human Resources and Excellent Indonesia. “
