DEPOK – The Postgraduate Program in Accounting Sciences (PPIA) at FEB UI welcomed new students for the odd semester of the 2020/2021 Academic Year online using the zoom application on Monday and Tuesday (7 – 8 September 2020).

This year, the program has 32 new students consisting of 13 graduate students, 11 postgraduate students and 8 students of the Credit Earning Program (CEP).

Dr. Ancella Anitawati Hermawan, MBA., CA., ACMA., CGMA, Head of the Accounting Department at FEB UI, and Yulianti Abbas, Ph.D., welcomed the new students. The activity started with an introduction to the Postgraduate Study Program in Accounting Sciences, such as the academic system, staff & leaders, academic regulations, facilities and advantages by the Head of the PPIA Study Program, followed by testimonials from PPIA alumni.

PPIA special advisor Siti Chafrani Pratiwi, M. Ak chaired the introductory session to help the new students get acquainted with one another (in the same class) and how to use the remote learning platforms, Microsoft Team and Microsoft One Drive.

The first speaker on the second day, Nanda Ayu Wijayanti, shared the strategy for paper writing. First, know what you want to read. This means students need references available in reputable journals, such as Clarivate’s Social Sciences Citation Index, journals in the ABDC Journal List, and SCImago Journal and Country Rank. Second, learn more about the field of study through discussion with lecturers or fellow students in the classroom, at accounting research forums, and with guest speakers. Third, take part in workshops, econometrics training, and learn how to conduct efficient research. Finally, work together to read and discuss papers in groups. Talk to seniors, they have insights into how to survive in the classroom. Doctoral colleagues are a good source of information when it comes to research ideas or methodologies.

Luluk Tri Wulandari, Research & Subject Specialist Librarian at UI Library, explained the facilities at the Learning Resource Center (PSB), such as literature & database inquiries, research strategies, how to read journals, use of Endnote, and UI’s writing guidelines to avoid plagiarism.

Luluk said that UI’s library data on journal references showed that 64% of the problems in searching online literature are mismatch between keywords and results. Meanwhile, 92% of the problems in online search for literature are due to search skills. Luluk offered tips for better search results, including by determining a topic based on analysis, keywords, synonyms/jargons/ terms, and context. Then, search using the search process “AND” or “NOT” and create citations. “Finally, use limiters to determine time frame, type of literature, gender, age, population and language,” said Luluk.

UI’s IT and References Librarian Maruf Patimura explained that Endnote is an application to create a literature database that can be used to manage citations and bibliographies. Endnote can be installed and downloaded on the endnote.com page. The application has various styles of obtaining documents and references.

“Basically, the benefit of using Endnote is that we have data backups for the literature that has been searched and can be used for creating citations and bibliographies. In addition, it prevents plagiarism, which is committed on the pretext that students do not do it intentionally and forget to mention the sources and simply copy and paste texts and quote other people’s work,” he concluded. hjtp)
