DEPOK ā€“Ā (10/9/2020) To welcome the new academic year 2020ā€“2021, the Doctoral Degree Program in Economics (PPIE), FEB UI, held a webinar on Thursday (10/9/2020) for new graduate and postgraduate students for the odd semester.

PPIE FEB UI welcomed 116 new students consisting of 110 graduate students (18 linkage program students and 92 regular students, 1 foreign student from Sudan who received the Developing Countries Partnership scholarship, KNB) and six postgraduate students.

This year, PPIE FEB UI collaborated with several education providers, including the Bappenas, the Ministry of Finance, Statistics Indonesia (BPS), and the Ministry of State Secretariat. The latter, a new partner for the linkage program together with PPIE and the University of Adelaide, secured funding for the second year of Australia Awards in Indonesia.

The Bappenas sent 17 people to study at PPIE FEB UI (10 for the regular program and 7 for the linkage program supported by the Netherlands). The Ministry of Finance sent 43 people, BPS 12 for the graduate program and 2 for the postgraduate program, the Ministry of State Secretariat sent 6 people for the linkage program.

The webinar was opened with opening remarks by Teguh Dartanto, Ph.D., Vice Dean I, Education, Research and Student Affairs, FEB UI; Vid Adrison, Ph.D., Head of the Department of Economics; Sugiharso Safuan, Ph.D., Head of PPIE Graduate and Postgraduate Study Programs. Also present to give their opening remarks were PPIE FEB UI partners, namely Eni Lestariningsih, M.A., Head of BPS Education and Training Center; Samidi Fahrudin, Head of the Ministry of State Secretariat’s Education and Training Center; Ali Muharam, M.S.E., M.A., Head of the Education Division of the Bappenasā€™s Pusbindiklatren; and Ganti Lis Ariyadi, Head of the PPSDM-BPPK Scholarship Management Division of the Ministry of Finance.

The new students were also welcomed by FEB UIā€™s support units, including the Center for Learning Resources, Information Systems, Facilities and Infrastructure, as well as the data laboratory of the Department of Economics. Lastly, a sharing session with PPIEā€™s alumni.

Sugiharso Safuan, Ph.D., said that PPIE FEB UIā€™s graduate study program was accredited by BAN-PT with an excellent (A) predicate (26 September 2017). The postgraduate study program was given an excellent (A) predicateĀ  (25 August 2020), both valid for five years. UIā€™s Master Program in Economics is ranked at number 16 in the Far East Asia Masterā€™s Ā Degree Program in Economics by Eduniversal 2019/2020. The challenge is how to increase the number of publications of research results by PPIEā€™s graduate and postgraduate students in reputable international journals and accredited national journals.

“PPIEā€™s research clusters cover monetary economics and finance, international finance and trade, regional and urban economics, labor economics, public economics and finance, natural resources and environmental economics, and development economics. Since 2019, PPIE has been working with 12 universities, 6 in Japan, 2 in Australia, 3 in the Netherlands, and 1 in the US,” said Sugiharso.

“We have to overcome the stigma, that studying at PPIE FEB UI is hard and takes a long time. Prove yourselves, that you can graduate on time, with good results, and can contribute to efforts to develop the nation,ā€ Sugiharso told the new PPIE students.

Dr. Irfani Fithria, a PPIEI alumna, class of 2015, said that to get into PPIE was the most beautiful gift she was grateful for because of the fierce competition for a spot in the program. “Studying at PPIE FEB UI means you must focus on your goals, formulate or set your expectations according to your abilities, focus, don’t listen to other people, be optimistic, don’t procrastinate, manage time between social life and study, build networks and support systems. Involve everyone you trust who can offer comfort and certainly involve God in all our affairs, take care of your health or don’t overwork,” said Irfani.

Afiat Ria Nabati, S.Mn., S.H., M.S.E., an alumna of the regular graduate program, said that studying at PPIE FEB UI one must adapt to developments in economics. Students should share their problems with friends and lecturers, maintain the sense of togetherness, keep their spirit, intensify communication, optimize facilities, have fun, think critically and analytically, participate in activities that widen their horizon (seminars, general and guest lectures, conferences, and so on), and be mentally strong. The key is 3 S, namely Senang (happy), Semangat (Enthusiastic), and Sujud (Pray).

Ari Tri Haryanto, an alumna of the graduate linkage program, class of 2018, added that the UI-ANU linkage program offers an advantage as students can pursue a double degree,Ā have a unique study experience, and write their thesis at the partner unviersity. He cited culture shock,Ā short adaptation period, and heavier study load as the challenges faced by students of the linkage program. (hjtp)
