Independent Production of Medical Devices: UI Ventilator in LKPP E-Catalog

DEPOK – (9/8/2021) Universitas Indonesia (UI) through the Directorate of Innovation and Science Techno Park (DISTP) held the UI Innovation Month to carry out one of the goals of the Tridharma of Higher Education, as well as participating in enlivening the 2021 National Technology Awakening Day (Harteknas). UI Innovation Month will be held on 9, 10, 12, and 13 August 2021, and will be held via the zoom platform, and broadcast live streaming on UI’s youtube channel.

These activities consist of a series of webinars, focus group discussions, talk shows, and virtual innovation exhibitions, by raising topics related to the stages of research and innovation development of academics, intellectual property management, downstream research and innovation products through commercialization licensing cooperation or forming start-ups to discussion of funding and strategies to attract investors needed for start-ups.

Rector of UI Prof. Ari Kuncoro, S.E., M.A., Ph.D., was present as the keynote speaker and opened the event. Prof. Ari said that UI always strives to be a solution provider for various problems faced by the nation. This is what drives UI to transform into an Entrepreneurial University. The various activities carried out by UI, including in the field of research and innovation, are no longer aimed at merely encouraging the creation of academic reputation through publications and the number of intellectual property rights, but for things that have a greater impact by encouraging the downstreaming and commercialization of all thinking and creative minds.

UI also plays a major role in being the government’s best partner in formulating evidence-based policies, including in handling pandemics, social restrictions, vaccination strategies, and other issues. “This webinar is expected to increase the capacity of Indonesian Human Resources (HR), and UI academics, as well as to improve the quality and quantity of research products and intellectual property product innovations, and the downstreaming of research and innovation products,” said Prof. Ari.

The first session of the UI Innovation Month titled “The 76th Independence of Indonesia with Independent Medical Device Production: UI Ventilator in the LKPP E-Catalog” presented four speakers, namely Dr. Ir. Hendri D.S. Budiono, M.Eng (Dean of the Faculty of Engineering UI), Dr. Basari, S.T., M.Eng. (Head of the UI Ventilator Team and Head of the FTUI Biomedical Engineering Study Program), Ir. H. Hadi Pranoto (Director of CV Bartec Utama Mandiri), and dr. Ramdinal Aviesena Zairinal, Sp.S. (Head of the UI Hospital Emergency Unit). The session was moderated by Prof. Dr. dr. Budi Wiweko, Sp.OG, MPH (Professor of the Faculty of Medicine UI).

Dr. Hendri said that, “COVENT-20 started in February with a fairly short and extraordinary study, because it only started from March to June 2020, which is only four months and is now able to roll out to several hospitals throughout Indonesia. However, we have to wait for approximately one year to enter the Government Goods/Services Procurement Policy Institute (LKPP),” he said.

Dr. Basari, S.T., M.Eng. added the purpose of this research is how to develop a standardized transport ventilator that can be used for emergencies. A transport ventilator is a machine that helps breathing and provides oxygen support to patients on the way to the hospital. “UI Ventilator started when we thought about trying the ventilator that was needed at that time, namely the transport ventilator plus the CPAP function,” said Dr. Basari.

Ir. H. Hadi Pranoto explained the two functions of COVENT-20, namely the Continuous Positive Airway Pressure (CPAP) mode which functions to meet the oxygen levels in the blood in conscious patients so that the oxygen levels in the blood increase. While the function of Continuous Mandatory Ventilation (CMV) Mode is to help patients who are unconscious, and have difficulty breathing.

“The reason for developing a transport ventilator is because the number of Patients Under Supervision (PDP) who experience respiratory failure and require ventilator transportation at home or when traveling to the hospital in an ambulance, is higher than patients who are positively infected with Covid-19, and the lack of beds for home patients. sick.” Hadi said.

Ramdinal Aviesena Zairinal, Sp.S. (Head of the RSUI Emergency Unit) also explained that the Covid-19 pandemic situation in Indonesia requires strong resources, one of which is medical equipment. Hospitals are required to be able to help patients regardless of the situation and condition. “COVENT-20 can be used in emergency services in hospitals, especially for initial treatment and patient transport.” Ramdinal said.

The UI Ventilator Team developed a safe and functional Pneumatic System Based Low Cost Local Transport Ventilator named COVENT-20. This ventilator has several advantages, including having a compact and simple form, making it safe to use for travel to the isolation room. Second, it is easy to operate and saves energy for handling PDP and Covid-19 positive patients. Third, the cost of manufacturing COVENT-20 is lower when compared to currently available commercial transport ventilator types. This ventilator is also equipped with Positive End Expiratory Pressure (PEEP) and uses a microchip to store programs and data. COVENT-20 has been distributed to 180 hospitals, both Covid-19 referral hospitals and emergency hospitals, throughout Indonesia.

“At UI, the principle that innovation must meet market demands is not just a jargon, but has been consistently implemented. DISTP created various idea forums by inviting stakeholders using UI innovation products, such as the Indonesian Medical Device Manufacturers Association (ASPAKI), the Association of Medical and Laboratory Equipment Companies (Gakeslab), the Indonesian Engineers Association (PII), and even international medical device companies. The emergence of the UI ventilator, which was innovated in a very short time until it appeared in LKPP is one of the main examples of UI’s responsiveness in producing innovative products needed by the community.” said the DISTP director.
