UI Launches Makara UI Academy Online Learning Platform

DEPOK – (17/8/2021) Universitas Indonesia (UI) launched the Makara UI (MUI) Academy to coincide with the Independence Day of the Republic of Indonesia on Tuesday (17/8). This is an online learning platform that can help realize access to inclusive education. MUI Academy is intended to be accessible anywhere, anytime, and by anyone. At the launching event, a talk show was also held with the theme “Excellent Human Resources Towards Advanced Indonesia.”

MUI Academy is a commercial product packaged in the form of videos and a web-based learning platform. PT Iam Edu Networks is an educational platform company founded in Indonesia together with the largest EduTech company in Korea, NHN Edu, which provides digital services to assist school governance, such as virtual consulting rooms, scheduling, lesson materials, remote classes, and classroom online discussion. In this collaboration, PT Daya Makara UI plays a role in preparing the curriculum and learning materials as well as providing trainers, LSP UI acted to implementing the competency-based certification assessment process and assessor, and PT Iam Edu Networks acting as a platform, multimedia, content, and operational provider.

The MUI Academy program was inaugurated by Acting Director General of Higher Education, Research, and Technology of the Republic of Indonesia Prof. Ir. Nizam, M.Sc., DIC, Ph.D., IPU, Asean Eng., representing the Minister of Education and Culture, Research and Technology of the Republic of Indonesia, Nadiem Anwar Makarim, B.A., M.B.A. In his remarks, Prof. Nizam said that the Ministry of Education and Culture welcomed the presence of the MUI Academy. “We hope that the MUI Academy can become a mechanism for people who want to continue learning. In fact, re-learning, re-skilling, and unlearning activities are a necessity in the era of digital transformation that requires people to continue to learn new skills and abilities.” he said.

Universities play an important role in efforts to adapt in the digital era. The Indonesian Minister of Manpower, Dr. Hj. Ida Fauziah, M.Sc., who was the keynote speaker in this activity also conveyed the same statement. According to her, higher education is one of the keys to creating superior human resources for Indonesia’s development, because higher education can transform economic structure, vertical socio-economic mobility between generations, and access to employment opportunities for women.

In her presentation, the Minister of Manpower cited data from the Central Statistics Agency in February 2021, from a total of 35.8 million young workers aged 15-29 years, around 15.08% had higher education, while out of a total of 102.06 million people in the workforce aged 30 years and above, only about 12.24% have received higher education. This indicates that higher education has succeeded in producing vertical social mobility between generations and our young generation in general has a much better level of education than the previous generation. For this reason, the existence of inclusive education access such as the MUI Academy is important, so that the community can access certified higher education without having to go through a long and complicated process.

UI Rector Prof. Ari Kuncoro, S.E., M.A., Ph.D., said in his opening remarks that the MUI Academy is an UI adaptation to changes in the digital transformation era that has occurred in the last 3-5 years. This program is also UI’s commitment in implementing the government’s Merdeka Campus program. “We aspire so that MUI Academy can become the main reference in developing human resource capabilities through quality materials, so that it can provide the best added value in building Indonesian people with caliber and character.” said Prof. Ari.

MUI Academy offers three programs for its users, namely e-learning program, competency test, and a bundling program, which is a combination of e-learning program and competency test. In the e-learning program, participants will receive learning videos, quizzes, mentoring sessions with trainers, and e-certificates. While the competency test program is an online exam that can be taken by the general public who have received adequate training related to their profession. If someone has taken the competency test, then he or she will get a professional certificate from LSP UI licensed from the National Professional Certification Agency (BNSP).

According to the Director of PT Daya Makara UI Fakhrudin, M.Si, Psychologist, the MUI Academy learning modules are prepared by targeting all levels of society, including children, teenagers, students, college students, housewives, job seekers, to Civil Servants. “In the next few years, 48 nationally certified training modules are planned, including: Public Relations Officer, Office Executive Administration Assistant, Tour Guide, Indonesian Language for Foreign Speakers, Welding Training, and many other trainings according to UI competencies.” he said.

Collaborating institutions can also develop their own training modules, which will be executed by the MUI Academy’s internal team. After the launch, followed a talk show session hosted by Reska Herlambang, Presenter from the Television of the Republic of Indonesia (TVRI).

In the talkshow session, four speakers were presented, namely Wikan Sakarinto, S.T., M.Sc., Ph.D (Director General of Vocational Education Kemendikbudristek), Kunjung Masehat, S.H., M.M (Head of BNSP), Prof. Dr. Nurliah Nurdin, MA (Director of STIA Polytechnic of the Jakarta State Administration Institute), and Prof. Dr. Ir.
