DEPOK – (9/8/2022) The Faculty of Economics and Business, Universitas Indonesia (FEB UI), in collaboration with OPHI University of Oxford, held “OPHI Summer School 2022: Multidimensional Poverty Measurement and Analysis” on August 1-12, 2022.

Evi Sanjaya, a Summer School 2022 participant from North Sulawesi, said she wanted to learn more about poverty measurement because she currently works for the Minahasa Central Statistics Agency (BPS), which focuses on data collection. “I believe this course program can help me understand poverty. In addition, I want to expand my network for my future education and career.”

She explained, “For the past week, I have been studying the global and national Multidimensional Poverty Index (MPI). Most importantly, I learned normative decisions; this is a challenging part for me.”

“After I finish Summer School and return to the institution, I want to share this knowledge with my colleagues. In addition, I want to initiate discussions with the local government. I will start from a small area to try to measure MPI,” said Evi when interviewed at the Postgraduate Building 4th Floor, FEB UI Campus Depok, Tuesday (9/8).

BPS is a strategic institution that provides statistical data for development. However, Evi hopes that her institution not only provides data but can carry out measurements and provide suggestions, primarily through MPI, to help alleviate poverty.

Meanwhile, Carolina Rota, an Italian student who recently graduated from a Master of Development Studies at Oxford University, said, “I joined the course on the advice of Prof. Sabina Alkire. During my master’s studies, I did not delve into the technical part of MPI or plan making. So, I came here to learn about it. It’s interesting, during my education, I also learned to deal with MPI, but more in an academic way.”

Coming from vastly different backgrounds, Evi and Carolina were able to share new learnings. “I focus on quantitative data collection, while Carolina tends to be more qualitative. So, we can provide different perspectives and implement them here,” said Evi.

Then, Evi talked about her experience at the FEB UI Campus, “It’s so great! The campus is huge, but everything is connected. We can use buses or other transportation to take us to other places. The staff and students are amiable and helpful. So, for me, it was fantastic.”

“Everyone I met was amicable. Here, I’m learning, sharing food, and talking together. It’s a campus with great infrastructure, lots of green space!” Carolina adds. (mh)
