Department of Management, FEB UI, Named  Partner University in Marketeers Hangout, “More Creative, More Productive”

DEPOK – The Covid-19 pandemic has forced many of us to carry out our activities from home. Social restrictions have limited our activities. However, these should not hurt our creativity and productivity. In view of the current situation, Marketeers held Marketeers Hangout 2020 entitled “More Creative, More Productive”. The event was hosted by Yosanova Savitry.

Marketeers Hangout 2020 was the biggest webinar event held in Indonesia that lasted for two days. The webinar was composed of 30 sessions featuring 50 speakers and involving 1,000 participants. Marketeers Hangout was organized by Markplus, Inc. The Department of Management, Faculty of Economics and Business, Universitas Indonesia, was one of the partner universities. The event on the Zoom Webinar video conference platform was held on Wednesday-Thursday (17-18 / 6/2020).

Speakers at the event were Dr. Jacky Mussry, vice chairman of MarkPlus, Inc. who is also a graduate of the Doctoral Degree Program in Management Sciences at FEB UI (S3 PPIM FEB UI), and Jahja Setiaatmadja, president director of PT Bank Central Asia Tbk. who is also an FEB UI graduate.

Jacky Mussry, the first speaker, said that Covid-19 has a bigger impact than World Wars I & II because the whole world has been affected. In Indonesia, MSMEs are the most affected. President Joko Widodo issued five major schemes to save MSMEs affected by Covid-19, including social assistance for the poor and vulnerable groups, tax incentives, relaxation programs and MSME loan restructuring, expansion of financing for MSMEs in the form of working capital assistance, and ministries/government institutions, SOEs, regional governments told to serve as a cushion in the MSME business ecosystem, especially in the early stages of recovery.

In addition, Covid-19 has a short-term impact as it limits human interaction that in turn has long-term impacts on markets, industries, education, shopping centers, airlines, travel, hotels, tourism, property, automotive, retail, and so on. “To restore the economy, the government is preparing for a new normal so that Q3 and Q4 can actualize economic changes. Essentialy, we need to explore and take advantage of existing opportunities, “said Jacky.

The pandemic means that it is inevitable that people should adapt to the new normal that is not the same as pre-pandemic condition with restrictions on physical activity, working from home, to dependence on digital platforms in carrying out their activities. “However, people, especially business people, should not give up. They must remain creative and productive in this difficult time,” said Jacky.

Jahja Setiaatmadja, the second speaker, said that strong leadership plays an important role in a business. This means it is not enough to fill leadership roles with great people. Leadership requires a great team. That is what is called servant leardership that appreciates not just a strong and great person. We must have strong people on the team. There are people with strategic strength and others who have wisdom.

“A leader will not function at all if the team behind him/her is not supportive. Therefore, a leader must be able to motivate his/her subordinates through coordination rather than feeding their own egos,” Jahja said.

A leader must be able to make each member contribute equally. No one should feed their ego. A leader must ensure that all members have the right to make suggestions or give input. “Sometimes, people hear without listening. If that is the case, people with the potential and experience will hesitate to contribute their thoughts. Whether or not it (the proposal) can be applied is another matter. Listen to suggestions.

“At Bank BCA, everyone can express their opinion. However, their opinion should not be based solely on theories because not all theories can be applied in the real world. Employees should provide real-world facts,” Jahja concluded.  (hjtp)
