UI is awarded the  First Rank Innovative College Award in the Innovation Management Category

DEPOK – (10/11/2020) Universitas Indonesia (UI) was awarded  the first rank award in Indonesia as an innovative university in innovation management. The award was presented  directly by the Minister of Research and Technology / Head of the Agency.

The Prof. Bambang Permadi Soemantri Brodjonegoro, Ph.D National Research and Innovation award to UI Rector Prof. Ari Kuncoro, S.E, M. A, Ph.D, at the implementation of the Indonesia Innovation Expo 2020, at the B.J Habibie Building Auditorium, Central Jakarta, Tuesday (10/11).

ndonesian President Joko Widodo officially opened a series of activities for the Innovation Indonesia Expo 2020, which will last for four days, namely 10-13 November 2020. In his speech, President Jokowi said, “Innovation is the key to transformation. Innovation is the energy for change. Innovation is a solution to solve problems. Innovation is what is needed  for  winning the competition. During the COVID-19 pandemic, we saw how important innovation is, all countries are competing to become the foremost, fastest, superior countries through innovation. Likewise, in our country, innovation is growing through new breakthroughs in the fields of health, medical devices, and others. Various research communities are also continuing to work to find drugs and therapies to deal with COVID-19. This is proof that we have many great talents to work towards realizing the independence and excellence of the nation.”

In his speech, Prof. Bambang Brodjonegoro said that, “The triple helix synergy and collaboration in producing national products needs to be strengthened in order to encourage innovation-based import substitution or even create innovations that can encourage exports of Indonesian products. The joint activities in the National Research Priorities and the Covid-19 Innovation Research Consortium are clear examples of the realization of the triple helix. Hopefully, innovation can continue to be the solution and main thoroughfare  of economic transformation so that Indonesia can get out of the middle income trap and realize its 2045 vision, which is to become a country with high income.”

UI Rector  Prof. Ari expressed his gratitude for the award given to UI. This is an encouragement for UI academics, innovators, researchers, and UI academics to work harder to work and innovate for the progress and independence of the nation. According to Prof. Ari, “In accordance with President Jokowi’s direction, UI is committed to strengthening innovation and competitiveness through the development of science and technology to improve people’s welfare. Innovation Management at UI is unique to business processes.”.

Research and studies conducted by UI focus on  problems that exist in society (market pull), are supported by human resources, budget and infrastructure, and are in a very strong national and international network. UI innovation achievements include intellectual property (KI) UI, which is the highest in Indonesia, with 2,542 copyrights and patents during  2015-2019. In November 2020, this figure is predicted to reach 3,000 KI. UI also promotes national industrialization, advances the growth of new, small and technology-based industries, gives birth to many startups, is directly involved in utilizing innovative products to the community from Sabang to Merauke, and contributes thoughts through policy recommendations or policy briefs for the government.

At the event, a video was played as a tribute to the late Ir. Hadi Tresno Wibowo, M.T, lecturer at the Naval Architecture and Shipbuilding Engineering Study Program – Department of Mechanical Engineering, Faculty of Engineering, UI, for his dedication as an Indonesian innovator through  creating flat plate ships using steel. This discovery has also been endorsed by President Jokowi to be used by fishermen in Indonesia.

The Indonesia Expo 2020 innovation also featured various innovative products from various Research, Development, Assessment and Application Institutions (Litbangjirap). A number of innovative products / works by UI academicians also participated in the exhibition, including Flat Plate Ship; COVENT-20; Flocked Swab HS-19; PPE Respirator; Respiratory Sterilizers; DM Edu Corner; Portable sampling device; The use of mesenchymal stem cells from the umbilical cord as therapy for COVID-19 patients; Tools for Providing Clean Air for Health Workers NSN20. Likewise, at the 2020 Artificial Intelligence Summit (AIS) exhibition at the Indonesia Innovation Expo 2020, including the application for translating the Sign Language Movement to Indonesian Text; Sharikuy Chatbot educative to introduce sharia financial products; Telemedicine; BudayaKB; Multilabel Hate Speech and Abusive Language Detection in Indonesia Twitter.
