UI-BRIN Assesses Multi-stakeholder Research and Innovation Collaboration for Advanced Indonesia 2045

DEPOK (6/22/2022) – The Directorate of Innovation and Science Techno Park and the Faculty of Economics and Business (FEB) of the Universitas Indonesia (UI) in collaboration with the National Research and Innovation Agency (BRIN) held a webinar featuring BRIN Head of Research Center for Cooperatives, Corporations, and Popular Economy Irwanda Wisnu Wardhana SST, MPD, Ph.D., as a speaker. The webinar discussed how collaboration can be done on research in Indonesia and multi-stakeholder innovation to achieve an advanced Indonesia 2045.

In the webinar “Collaborative Research and Multistakeholder Innovation to Achieve Advanced Indonesia 2045”, Irwanda Wisnu Wardhana explained three things related to collaborative research and multi-stakeholder innovation. First, the impact of research and innovation on economic progress; second, how the country’s progress is highly dependent on technological advancement; and third, discussing BRIN’s support for Research-based Tri Darma collaboration.

According to him, the impact of research and innovation on economic progress can be seen through the growth of the Covid-19 vaccine in Indonesia. “If mass vaccination is not carried out, immunity and economic recovery prediction will occur in 2024. However, after the acceleration, we can now remove the mask and the hit agent of the economy has begun to recover. This illustrates how research results impact the economy,” said Irwanda Wisnu Wardhana.

“Technology Advancement determines the position of our nation. We must encourage current and future leaders to always care about the advancement of research and innovation because it can be seen in 2016 how the export of hi-tech goods is relatively low compared to other countries such as China, the United States, Germany, Japan, and Mexico. This is very much felt until now where we are still dominant as a market, not a producer,” Irwanda Wisnu Wardhana explained.

At the end of the presentation, Irwanda explained the innovations BRIN can do at UI in connecting the ecosystem consisting of parties interested in technology research, one of which is a lecturer or student. Some of these strategies include regulatory strategies, open platform strategies to facilitate collaboration, researcher mobility strategies, namely facilities for students who want to continue their education by doing research (degree by research), and facilitation scheme strategies such as funding for collaboration with the establishment of research collaboration centers.

The event, which was held on Monday (20/6), was held online through zoom and the UI youtube channel. Attending the event were the Dean of FEB UI, Teguh Dartanto, Ph.D., D; Director of Innovation and Science Techno Park UI, Ahmad Gamal, S.Ars., M.Si., M.U.P., Ph.D.; Director of Administration, Data and Product Management of Research and Innovation (ADPPRI) Universitas Indonesia, Suminto B. Ak., S.Sos., M.Si; and lecturer and researcher of FEB UI, Luluk Widyawati, Ph.D.

In his welcoming speech, ADPPRI UI Director Suminto, representing the UI Vice Chancellor for Research and Innovation, said that universities as centers of science and technology are essential to the n-helix synergy.

Universities are expected to implement Tri Darma for an advanced, growing, and resilient Indonesia. “Efforts made by UI in supporting, encouraging, and creating a research and innovation ecosystem are through various facilitations including the provision of various funding schemes both internally and externally; providing facilities and infrastructure including laboratories, co-working places, and others; and providing various types of training and certification, and so on,” Suminto said.

Meanwhile, Ahmad Gamal, in his speech when opening the event, explained the role of the UI Directorate of Innovation and Science Techno Park in conducting multi-stakeholder research and innovation collaborations by explaining how the structuring process between UI, researchers, and industry partners in developing a joint framework.

He hopes that collaboration with BRIN can break down or reduce the bureaucratization of research. He believes too much intervention or regulated research may make researchers not innovative. He also hopes that the licensing system and anything related to research will have a faster process where BRIN can become a one-stop shop for easier licensing.
