DEPOK – (14/7/2022) Professor in Accounting and Koch Fellow, University of Kansas USA, Prof. Adi Masli, Ph.D., was a speaker at the Academic Talk of the Graduate Program in Accounting, Faculty of Economics and Business, University of Indonesia (PPIA FEB UI), with the topic “Building Theoretical and Practical Contributions: Insights from Auditing and Information System Research” in a hybrid manner which took place in room 403, Postgraduate Building, Thursday (7/14). The event was opened by Mrs. Yulianti Abbas, Chair of the Department of Accounting FEB UI, and moderated by Elfina Astrella Sambuaga, PPIA FEB UI S-3 Student.

The purpose of the PPIA Academic Talk is to improve the competence of students, lecturers, and alums in conducting research. Prof. Adi Masli, in his presentation, explained the flow of research writing, starting from finding research ideas to journal submission. Prof. Adi emphasized the importance of original and innovative ideas. Therefore, in finding sources of academic research ideas, a researcher should not only read journals on their topic but also outside the topic to add insight. In addition, researchers can identify current topics through business magazines and news or survey reports provided by various organizations and industry associations. Prof. Adi also emphasized the importance of networking to open potential research collaborations with other researchers.

Furthermore, Prof. Adi discussed in more depth the publication process. Prof. Adi emphasized that rejection is standard for researchers, and researchers do not need to be discouraged if they experience rejection. However, researchers must still strive to publish their research in the best outlet. Therefore, Prof. Adi emphasized that researchers must be careful with predatory journals and need to ensure that the “home” of their articles is a reputable journal.

Prof. Adi also shared his experience and provided tips and tricks in the publication process. The Introduction is essential and should be utilized by researchers to “sell” their research to readers. In addition, special attention is also needed to the cover letter that accompanies the journal submission. In the cover letter, researchers need to explain the novelty and contribution of their research and the suitability of the submitted research with the mission of the intended journal. Prof. Adi also reminded us to treat reviewers as friends and gave examples of how researchers respond to reviewer feedback in the Revised & Resubmit process. The critical things that researchers should remember in responding to reviewers are: (1) always be polite and grateful, (2) respond to all feedback, and (3) provide a comprehensive response.

The PPIA Academic Talk with Prof. Adi Masli ended with a discussion and question and answer session, enthusiastically followed by participants offline and online. Of course, this event not only increases the competence of PPIA faculty, students, and alums in the field of research but also inspires them to continue to produce the best work in the field of research.
