DEPOK – The Accounting Department of FEB UI in collaboration with the Accountant Professionalism Study (SPA) held a Public Speaker Training which took place in the Student Center room, on Tuesday (12/11/2019).

This Public Speaker Training was opened by remarks by the Head of the FEB UI Accounting Department, Ancella A. Hermawan. She said that SPA is increasingly aware that an accountant must also have soft skills in the form of public speaking, because of the criticism leveled for accountants, for example in preparing reports that must be presented before other people. It was an honour for us, because FEB UI’s alumni are willing to be speakers in the Public Speaker Training for FEB UI students, especially in Accounting.

Procter and Gamble (P&G) Shave Care Brand Manager of Indonesia, Caroline Herlina, said that public speaking is the delivery of an intention or goal to the other person and how to convey it. It is easier for people to understand by telling stories than by pictures. The capacity of public speaking that is owned by each individual is different, because it is caused by environmental / life factors such as family, life experience, social influence, and norms / culture. In addition, it is also caused by selective mutism, where a person’s condition in certain situations cannot speak due to past trauma. To overcome it, this must be trained.

The principle of public speaking is divided into 4 parts: first, having a goal (related to asking for decisions, input, giving updates, motivating / reprimanding, appreciation, selling ideas / products / services / events). Second, getting to know the audience (regarding expectations, level of understanding, what is important to them). Third, preparing the opening, content, closing. And fourth, the level of planning related to preparation, structure and main points, following the script.

Therefore, public speaking that is needed by Public Accountants today is not how much information is known, but knowing what information is relevant. When, you are presenting in front of other people think that it is a place to learn to practice self-confidence is not a gig, if the gerogy speak more slowly. In addition, the need for cooperation from friends / mentors, aware of the time available / remaining, who is a trusted person / can handdle them well. And the ability to analogy, complete or deliver, friendly and with respect, and take a chance.

“Confidence is based on having clear goals, good audience recognition and careful preparation,” concluded Caroline Herlina. (Des)
