PPIM FEB UI Held Public Lecture from Universiti Kelantan Malaysia Discussing Leadership in Malaysian Wage Council

DEPOK – Management Science Postgraduate Program (PPIM) held a Guest Lecture by Balakrishnan Parasuraman as Professor from Universiti Malaysia Kelantan which took place in room 401, Postgraduate Building, Saturday (12/07/2019).

This Guest Lecture is for lectures on Strategic Leadership and Change Processes with students from the specifics of Strategic Management (S-2) class of 2018. Topics delivered on “Leadership in Malaysian Wage Council”. The topic is interesting for students to add insight in order to find out how the leadership process in the Malaysian Wage Council. As the moderator at the Guest Lecture was Aryana Satrya who bridged the discussion between students and speakers.

Professor from Universiti Malaysia Kelantan, Balakrishnan Parasuraman explained the dynamics of setting minimum wages in Malaysia. The determination of minimum wages is based on basic and additional criteria, such as average wages, consumer price index, productivity growth, and the unemployment rate. Employers who do not follow the provisions will be fined up to prison terms.

“If at first the National Wages Consultative Council Act of 2011 set different minimum wages for peninsular Malaysia and Sabah / Sarawak, then the Mahathir Mohamad government in 2019 changed the minimum wage policy to be the same for all of Malaysia, and would subsequently set a minimum wage of 2020 higher in big cities, “said Balakrishnan Parasuraman.

“I remind that the minimum wage policy is a joint effort to maintain the welfare of the community,” he said at the end of the presentation. (Des)
